It’s the number one problem I hear from my clients: they need to hire help, but have a hard time finding good people. It’s a common problem across all industries. A lot of it matters on how good a boss you are and what you’re offering. Here are some tips on how to find good employees (some of these might surprise you).
First off, make a list of what your ideal employee looks like. Yes, this may sound woo-woo, but it can help when you have an actual person in front of you. You’ll be able to refer to your list and make sure this person would be compatible with how you work. But do remember that not all people are alike, so think about that when you’re interviewing. Write out the most desirable skills, talents, and personality traits. Number them based on how important they are to you. You could even add these to your application.
If your position is entry-based or doesn’t need a lot of training, consider posting on social media. Another good location to advertise this type of position is at your local university. A lot of times people are looking for work and coming across your post might be a huge relief. If you need a more qualified employee, make sure to check out an online resume database daily. Make sure you have the right questions lined up to ask them, to protect yourself from clowns. And always, no matter what the position, you should do a drug test and a background check.
Finally, it’s best practice to hire slow and fire fast. A bad employee can waste your time and money, as well as cause problems with your clients. This can reflect badly on your reputation. Take your time with hiring to make sure you cover all bases. Never give up; good employees are hard to come by. When you do find someone, make sure you value them and they will stay!
