When you’re growing a business it’s always hard to know when is the next step to take. Things like when to hire, when to open up a new office are hard to figure out. With hiring there are certain steps you want to take before you get to the point of finding the right person. Let’s go over some of these steps together.

One of these things is to make sure your systems and processes are in place before you hire someone. This means having a something written up that shows exactly how you like to run your business. This should have everything from how you deal with your customers to how you run the show. With this in place, hiring can be a lot easier for both you and your employee. Everyone is different and you want to make sure they do it to your expectations.

When you’re hiring, don’t hire an assistant. Instead, hire a copy of yourself. With an assistant they can only help you with the things that you put them in charge. A copy of yourself will be able to run several things at once, giving you a lot more free time. It’s important to teach your copies of yourself how you like to treat your customers. Customers may come for your service, but stay around for your customer service. A new hire won’t know how you deal with your clients unless you tell them.

It is generally best to hire new green contractors rather than older contractors. Older contractors will be more set in their ways and won’t want to change. New contractors will be moldable to what you want and desire in a helper. Remember to hire for personality. You can always train for new skills.

Finally you need to know exactly how your business stands before you think about hiring. You need to have at least 2 to 3 months of cash set aside while you are training your new hire. This is to protect yourself until you’re able to get them up and running. Your bookkeeper can help make sure you can afford hiring right now.
